David Kong, a longtime Mill Valley resident who served as an infantry scout in the U.S. Army during World War II, will be honored with the one of the nation’s highest civilian awards.
Kong, 93, was one of approximately 20,000 Chinese-Americans who served in the armed forces during that war, at a time when many Chinese people faced discrimination in the U.S. The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which greatly restricted Chinese immigration into the U.S., was in effect during much of the war.
